Zen Training Center Project
 
You are commissioned to design a meditation center in Palmdale, California which serves as:
     

- a non-denominational center for daily meditation (10-15 on any given day);
- a center for advanced Zen training (30 people on occasion);
- a retreat center for special groups (30 people very occasionally); and
- an education center - an example of living in harmony with nature and the environment.

 

An overall conceptual design should include the following:

 

- Sutra Hall;
- Zendo Hall;
- Bunk House (divided into male/female, 15 each);
- Toilet/Shower House (divided M/F but flexible to make single-sex facility);
- Parking - for 20 cars including 2 handicap spaces;
- Fire Truck Access, turn around;
- Permaculture gardens/ design; and
- Pattern Languages - as many overlapping patterns as possible.

 

The following will be the final presentation requirements for your design:

 

- Light Design - "When Are We?" (title, concept statement, diagram, 3-d design): any scale
- Entrance Design - "Where Are We?" (title, concept statement, diagram, 3-d design): any scale
- *Site Analysis: scale: 1" = 20' (color)
- *Site Plan: scale: 1" = 20' (color)
- *Site Model: scale: 1" = 20' (brown, gray, white - no color!)
- Building Plan/Section: scale: 1/8" = 1'0" (brown, gray, white - no color!)
- Building Model: scale: 1/8" = 1'0" (brown, gray, white - no color!)
- 5 - Pattern Language Color/Watercolor Sketches (per person) illustrating and keying in patterns incorporated in your design - small, simple, clear, eye-level perspectives with appropriate people
- *Presentation weaving the above parts together cohesively and in accordance with overall design concept using basic design principles of harmony, order, balance, contrast, hierarchy, etc. to communicate concept.
